shutterstock_109713119Halloween is a great time of the year especially for parents with children. Cochlear wants to help make sure that the night is full of giggles and a bounty of treats. To avoid any mishaps, here are some tips to add to your own safety precautions to help have a safe and fun Halloween:
• Before purchasing a costume, double check that the mask, hat or other
headgear fits comfortably and securely around the Nucleus Sound Processor.
• Pack a flashlight with fresh batteries, extra sound processor batteries, and a mobile phone for the outing.
• Decorate costumes and treat bags with reflective tape for trick-or-treating.
• Instruct your kids not to eat any of the candy until they come home and have had the treats examined by an adult.
• Guide young children from house to house always keeping at their side or holding their hands, particularly at crosswalks.
• For older children or teens traveling with friends, make sure you know where they’re going and insist on regular “check-ins.”

Pay Special Attention to Indicator Lights
Before you take children trick-or-treating, you can verify that they’re hearing by having the indicator lights of their sound processors turned On.

For Nucleus® Systems
• The indicator light on the Nucleus® 6 Sound Processor is located at the top of the earhook before the hook curves. Use the remote assistant to activate the indicator light. Refer to Page 45 of the CR230 Remote Assistant User Guide.
• If your child has a Nucleus® 5 Sound Processor, you will find the indicator light at the top of the earhook before the hook curves. Use the remote assistant to activate the indicator light. Refer to Page 49 of the CR110 User Guide.
• The indicator light on the Nucleus® Freedom® Sound Processor is located inside the earhook of the sound processor. A clinician can activate the indicator light within the program. Refer to Page 58 of the Freedom User Guide.
For Baha® Systems
• Your child’s sound processor can be configured by a hearing professional to have indicator lights. Talk to your clinician about activating these lights so you can see that your child’s sound processor is activated.
• Make sure you attach the sound processor to clothing with the Safety Line, to be sure it doesn’t get knocked off by a costume and lost
This year we hope the smile on a child’s face helps you to relive some of the happiest Halloweens of your childhood.
